We plan to repeat last year’s ‘Walking with Men’ memorial walk at Markham Vale on Ash Wednesday 14th February 2024. In this year when there is to be an exhibition in the Market Hall to mark 40 years since the miners’ strike, we go back another 11 years to the last of 3 disasters in the Markham Pit. We see the names of the miners who died inscribed on ‘walking’ figures up and down the hill which many followed down to the pit and back. Last year people were moved by the experience.

This year it is possible to go by bus from Beetwell St at 9.53, the bus tours round much of Chesterfield and Staveley to arrive just in time for the walk. Everyone welcome. Rendezvous at 11am at the Environment Centre.
